Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina recorded seven aces and sent Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin packing with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3 first-round victory over the No. 5 seed on Tuesday in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Rybakina had 25 winners against five unforced errors while Kenin had 28 winners and nine miscues. Kenin termed the loss as "really upsetting and disappointing" and said she felt "off" the entire match.
Rybakina will next face qualifier Katerina Siniakova, who posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win over fellow Czech Karolina Muchova.
Jennifer Brady posted an impressive 6-2, 6-1 upset of third-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, a two-time champion in Dubai. Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also pulled off a stunner by rolling to a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.
Seventh-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus moved on with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Greece's Maria Sakkari. Eighth-seeded Petra Martic of Croatia also advanced as she cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chinese Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh.
