Five Terrapins scored in double figures as Maryland rolled to an 82-52 victory over local rival Navy on Saturday at College Park, Md.
Navy (1-1) hung around the first half but couldn't overcome the Terrapins' torrid 68.2 shooting (30 of 44) shooting and Maryland's big 33-18 rebounding edge. Senior captain Cam Davis led the Midshipmen with 10 points, the only Mid in double figures, but the Terps pulled away in the second half when Aaron Wiggins scored all of his 14 points.
Guards Darryl Morsell and Eric Ayala led the Maryland attack with 15 apiece, and forward Galin Smith had 12 on 6-of-6 shooting from the field. Maryland holds a 32-28 lead in the all-time series with Navy, located just 30 miles away in Annapolis.
The two teams have played just three times since the programs met in the 1985 NCAA Tournament, when Len Bias' Terps came from behind to oust David Robinson's Midshipmen.
Navy hit just 6 of 24 (25 percent) from 3-point range and was outscored 50-27 in the second half when the Terrapins hit 18 of 24 shots (75 percent). The Terrapins (2-0) ran their nonconference home winning streak to 10 games and are now 54-6 in such games at home the last eight years.
John Carter Jr. and Luke Loehr each added seven points for Navy, which shot 40 percent overall from the field (22 of 55).
Maryland led 32-25 at the half, using a strong defensive effort to break a 20-20 tie. The Terrapins held Navy scoreless for over four minutes and built a 30-20 lead when Eric Ayala scored inside at the four-minute mark. The Midshipmen missed five straight shots and hit just 37.9 percent (11-of-29) in the first half.
An 8-1 run to start the second half, moved Maryland up 40-26 when Ayala drained a three with 18:13 left. Maryland had started slowly against Navy's 2-3 zone, turning the ball over seven times in the first 14 minutes.
