Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse and New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban were named the finalists for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Friday.
The award is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.
Voted on by a committee of senior NHL executives led by commissioner Gary Bettman, the winner will be announced on June 7. The winner receives a $25,000 donation from the National Hockey League Foundation to a charity or charities of his choice. The runners-up each receive a $5,000 donation.
Getzlaf, 37, is a founder of the Anaheim Ducks Learn to Play program that supports first-time players and has benefited more than 18,000 kids. He also hosts an annual golf event that raises money to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Getzlaf retired on April 5 after 17 seasons with the Ducks.
Nurse, 27, has been an outspoken advocate for diversity and inclusivity in the sport while speaking out against racism. He is an ambassador for the charitable organizations Free Play for Kids and Right to Play, and he created a scholarship fund in 2021.
Subban, 33, launched his own foundation in 2014 and has pledged $10 million over seven years to Montreal Children's Hospital. In March, he donated $1 million to support the Montreal mental health clinic Le Spot. A finalist for the fourth time, Subban is also co-chair of the NHL's Player Inclusion Committee.
