Defenseman Tyler Myers recorded a goal and an assist and the Vancouver Canucks hung on for a 4-3 win over the host Washington Capitals on Sunday.
Elias Pettersson, Kiefer Sherwood and Teddy Blueger also scored for the Canucks. Conor Garland added a pair of assists and Thatcher Demko made 29 saves.
Ryan Leonard and defensemen Jakob Chychrun and John Carlson got the goals for the Capitals, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome each had two assists and Charlie Lindgren stopped 20 shots.
Carlson's goal made the deficit one with 2:14 left. He scored on a slap shot from the point in the middle of the ice with Lindgren pulled for the extra attacker. It was the veteran blue-liner's first goal of the season.
The Caps continued to press, but Vancouver blocked five shots in the final 1:32 and Demko made a save of an Alex Ovechkin deflection attempt just before the final horn.
Pettersson's goal 59 seconds into the game gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead. He beat Lindgren with a wrist shot from the bottom part of the right circle.
The Canucks scored twice in 41 seconds late in the period to make it 3-0.
Myers roofed a shot during a goal-mouth scramble for a 2-0 lead with 2:49 left in the first period. Washington challenged goaltender interference, but the goal was upheld. The unsuccessful challenge resulted in a minor penalty for delay of game against the Capitals.
Sherwood tapped in a loose puck in the crease with 2:08 remaining in the opening period on the ensuing power play. It was Sherwood's fourth goal of the young season.
Vancouver's Filip Chytil had to be helped off the ice with 36 seconds left after a heavy mid-ice check by Wilson. The hit was reviewed, but Wilson was not penalized.
Chytil did not return. The Canucks' Jonathan Lekkerimaki also left the game after the first period.
Both suffered undisclosed injuries.
Blueger made it 4-0 nearly five minutes into the second period when he capitalized on a turnover deep in Washington's zone to score from the slot.
Leonard's power-play goal with 6:28 left in the middle period put the Capitals on the board.
Chychrun scored at the 9:01 mark of the third period to cut the deficit to 4-2.
