Defenseman Jake Walman celebrated his season debut by scoring 2:24 into overtime, fueling the visiting Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
Tim Stutzle was whistled for slashing 25 seconds into overtime to send Edmonton to the power play. Walman, who was activated off injured reserve on Monday, made Ottawa pay as his shot from the high slot beat Linus Ullmark to end the game.
Edmonton superstar captain Connor McDavid converted on the power play in the first period for his first goal of the season.
Reigning Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard scored his first career NHL goal and Stuart Skinner made 19 saves to record his 100th career win.
The Oilers rebounded after letting a two-goal lead in the third period go by the boards to snap a three-game losing skid.
Edmonton's Adam Henrique won five of seven draws while playing in his 1,000th career game.
The Oilers were playing without Kasperi Kapanen, who will miss several weeks with an undisclosed injury.
Ottawa's Dylan Cozens scored a power-play goal just 13 seconds into the third period and Thomas Chabot tallied 1:36 later.
Ullmark turned aside 22 shots for the Senators, who have lost five of their last six games (1-4-1).
Edmonton opened the scoring with 3:29 remaining in the first period.
A pinch by defenseman Evan Bouchard allowed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to collect the puck behind the net and backhand a soft feed to McDavid. The captain one-timed a shot from the left circle that sailed into the upper right-corner of the net, giving Bouchard an assist for his first point of the season.
The Oilers took advantage of an Ottawa offensive zone turnover to double the advantage just 49 seconds into the second period.
Leon Draisaitl skated in and fed Howard, who came out of the penalty box and wired a shot from the slot past Ullmark. Howard was playing in his sixth career NHL game since collecting 52 points (26 goals, 26 assists) last season with Michigan State.
Cozens halved the deficit with a wrist shot from the right circle and Chabot forged a tie after his blast from the point beat a screened Skinner.
